Supply gameplay content and design for board games, plus world-building and scriptwriting for video games. Intellectual property ideation, concept/character creation and story execution for comics, magazines, and digital. Propose directions for brand extensions into new play patterns/products/books/story scenarios. HASBRO

2010 - 2013

Managing Editor, Brand Story and Intellectual Property Development      

Creative Consultant for Hasbro Studios television/film projects. Brand story advisor for video games, apps, and commercials. Collaborated on transmedia strategies for entertainment franchises (from new properties to established brands to resuscitated archive brands). Co-led effort to establish best practices for competitive space analysis, storytelling, and brand creation. Brainstormed toy concepts with design/marketing, and collaborated on toy design pitches, briefs, development, and production. Evaluated outside brands for purchase. Created storyworlds with bibles and brand DNA documents, created artists’ briefs, and supervised fictional universe design. Scripted educational toys and contributed to direction at recording sessions. Wrote animated shorts. Edited in-pack books/comics. Partnered with marketing/legal to research trademark, copyright, and licensing histories. “Translator” between research and creative teams, and provided educational perspective for entertainment execution.

On-site Consultant, Brand Design and Intellectual Property Development

Studied properties’ histories, researched competitors, consulted marketing department, proposed creative positioning, and identified opportunities. Established brands’ points of view and places within Hasbro’s portfolio. Created pitches for new properties and brand re-launches. Supervised character/world design. Worked with artists to create visuals for setting tone/theme, and to showcase properties’ best attributes. 


Key Accomplishments:

  • Re-invented company’s brand story, bible, executive summary, and pitch templates, resulting in more effective brand/story pitching.

  • Re-imagined archive brands for potential animation projects.

  • Calculated and administered funds for outside talent and oversaw associated expenditures and schedules.

2009 - 2009

Freelance Consultant, Brand Design and Intellectual Property Development

Executed brand story exercises for intellectual properties based on Hasbro games. Identified core elements and evaluated story potential. Suggested how to grow audiences beyond core demographics. Established a timeline for this growth, demonstrating how/when the properties could be introduced into different media. Pitched ways to develop the brand story, starting with the original games, and expanding into print, online, mobile, toys, video games, and television, culminating in motion pictures.

MAD MAGAZINE

2005 - 2009

Senior Editor  

Created character/feature bibles for pitching to all media. Led efforts to analyze media environment and uncover potential business opportunities. Member of team deciding tone/themes/directions for magazines/products. Pitched books to publishing partners and shepherded subsequent development, ensuring faithfulness to MAD voice. Liaison to video game industry. Represented MAD on DC Comics digital initiatives committee, as well as on Comic-Con panels, and at speaking engagements. Commissioned and edited articles/cartoons. Consulted on art/design/production. 


Key Accomplishments:

  • Recruited over 45 writers and cartoonists and worked with them to create new intellectual properties that pushed MAD in new directions without betraying its core sensibility.

  • Key player in launch of MAD Kids magazine for 8-to-11-year-olds.

  • Creator of new “Strip Club” comics section and originating editor of Planet Tad feature.

  • Integral to multiple successful book pitches.

  • Negotiated pay, kept talent on budget and on schedule.

BIG RED CAPE PRODUCTIONS

Founder

Established animation company, managed team of animators. Led sales, production, writing, creative direction, and finance. 


Key Accomplishments:

  • Music video for kids’ CD distributed by Sony Wonder. Broadcast on Australian Saturday morning television. 

  • Created animation for Chabad telethon broadcast.

Creative Director

Authored character/visual bibles, scripted cartoons/comics, oversaw animation and web site creation. Supervised concept design for client companies such as Mainframe on TV projects, Hasbro on toy/film/TV projects, LeapFrog for toy/publishing projects, Autodesk, Oracle, and Pfizer for e-learning and marketing projects. Pitched properties, oversaw creation of trade show materials, managed creative assets and freelancer costs. 

Key Accomplishments:

  • Two World Animation Celebration Awards for web-based cartoon shorts.

  • Orchestrated signing with Hollywood management.

1995 - 1998

Conceptual Researcher, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Supervised production of concept reels for George Lucas, producer, and art department. Wrote accompanying research briefs. 


Key Accomplishments:

  • Created concept reels used for animatics/pre-visualization, and to inspire production and costume design, fight scene choreography, editing rhythms, and computer graphics environment building.

  • Created extensive database for tracking and cross-referencing film clips.
